Redway Runners ran the show with record number of runners at parkrun

Beginners' graduation group

Redway Runners beginners stole the show at this weekend’s Milton Keynes 5K parkrun in Willen with beginners graduating marking the end of their 10-week running course.

Team Green was out in full force at the beginners’ graduation on Saturday 30 March 2019. The award-winning community running team run regular courses for those wanting to start on their running journey and at the end of it take part in the Milton Keynes 5K parkrun at Willen.

A total of 320 started the course just over 10 weeks ago and some who have never run before. The club’s run lead and beginners’ co-ordinator, Annette Smyth said of the graduation, “The atmosphere was absolutely amazing! We had 386 from the club running which was almost half of the runners at the parkrun.”

“Well done to the runners who have turned up all week come rain or shine to run. This for me is what it is all about – a real celebration of their efforts.”

One of the runners who graduated included Debbie Wright from MK who signed up on the free Redway Runners course who is determined to run the Race for Life later this year in memory of family members who lost their lives to cancer. She is determined to run and not walk and this weekend’s parkrun has proved exactly that.

Debbie ran the whole of the course in just 43 minutes. “I felt absolutely isolated having lost not only my mother to ovarian cancer, my husband but my sister too of this awful disease. Redway Runners has helped me to learn how to run but also make some great friends too since I started this wonderful journey, said Debbie.

Martin Lawrence, the club’s Chair was delighted with the club’s successful graduation this weekend and said, “These free courses are for all abilities and ever so popular – we aim to provide a number of options to cater for all people as much as possible.”

“I am amazed by the dedication by those who take part in our beginners’ courses and when they graduate it gives not only me but our run leads such a great feeling for all their efforts and hard work.”

Club trip – Cyprus March 2019

Well as another club overseas trip, the 18th, comes to an end maybe time to reflect on the Redway Runners time in Paphos for some sun, sea, food, beers and even some running!

The Friday saw the 5K wine run and think we all had visions of running in the sun around a winery, passing through the vines, then sitting in a big grassy area drinking wine and more wine, well the reality was slightly different as we boarded the coaches early in the morning with the temperature gauge showing 16 degrees, but as the coach went into the hill and the mist it went down, down and down further settling at a chilly 10 degrees and driving rain. But the rain stopped for the run and this was all along roads around the area, not what had imagined but still a good morning and plenty of fun Special mention to James who was second home and Katie first lady and got the magnum of wine.

Sunday was big race day for the 21st Logicom Cyprus Marathon with a marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K we had Redway Runners taking part in each of the races and arriving at the start of the race it was like any local event with green club tops everywhere. The half marathon course was an out and back route along the main carriageways around Paphos, but good to spot lots of Redway Runners on the out and backs.

After the event, many Redway Runners seemed to enjoy the free beer and watched the awards being presented in the sun.

Team Redway Runners came second in the Marathon team event and third in the half marathon team event. Special mention for Redway Runners winning awards with Abi Gooch coming in as first lady in the marathon in her second home town and in front of a very proud mum. Katie Tucker was third in the women’s half marathon race. Sarah King and Sadie Hursey bought home age category awards – well done to all of them.

Often these runs are about the personal stories and with so many running must have been many, but well done to James Down who was first Redway Runner home in the half in just over 90 minutes, but before the run had done a little 7 mile run, then there was Amy Croker who completed her first half marathon, not a bad place to start and it was great to see Stephen Boothby back doing a half marathon after his bike accident last year – welcome back.

But club trips are about more than just running, it is about meeting new friends and great to catch up with Gosport runners and the Romania runners who joined Redway Runners runs last summer. The Robin Hood bar probably needs a mention – not sure too many of us remember the evenings spent there.

Thanks also to Katie for recommending Cyprus for this year’s club trip and putting on some extra sessions for Redway Runners to attend with core sessions and talks.

A lot of people have been already asking about the next club trips, we already have details for the September 2019 trip to Tallin in Estonia and for 2020 following several requests and recommendations we are looking at Malta, but more details to follow as soon as we have them.

Redway Runners Social Evening at MK Lightning Ice Hockey – Sunday 3 February 2019

For the fifth year running we are organising a Redway Runner Social evening to watch the Milton Keynes Lightning ice hockey team. The match is on Sunday 3 February 2019 versus the Glasgow Clan. The game starts at 5.15pm at the ice rink just behind “Argos” and “Toys R Us” near MK Central Station. MK Lightning have moved up to the top division of UK ice hockey (the Elite League). They are doing surprisingly well against the country’s best with a rebuilt team that play fast, exciting hockey. Let’s see if we can beat the 125 who attended last year!

We have managed to get an excellent discount on ticket prices. Adults will cost £13 (instead of the normal £18) and children under 16 years of age will be charged at £5. Those who have never been to ice hockey before are in for an evening of a fast paced, hard hitting game with the odd fight here and there! The game will be over at about 7.45pm. There is a splendid bar and good food and beverage facilities. We will all be seated in a block together which will add to the fun. To help those unfamiliar with ice hockey, we will circulate some basic information on what the game is all about just before the evening.

Please log in to you Redway Runners profile and select ‘events’ at the top of the screen, log on at:

Absolute closing date will be Thursday 31 January at 5pm.

If anybody fancies it, we can skate for free after the game until 10pm, you just need to pay for skate hire on the night at £2.50 each.

Happy Birthday Redway Runners

It is Happy New Year and 8th birthday of Redway Runners.

Last year has been another great year with the club and we finished the year with 2,367 members a pretty amazing achievement, for those that have long memories we worried about getting 10 to start the club and now…

Anyway 2018 was another great year for the club and we again achieved so much we:

  • we have had 2,143 runs in the club
  • if all the runners turned up together, we would have a run with 44,505 runners

We hosted a series of events including Beat the Barge, Furzton Relay, Redway Runners Festival of Running and new events with the Farm Run, Santa Saunter, Virtual challenger and the Old Money run

We turned out in force for the events in Milton Keynes and beyond with club trips as far afield as Riga in Latvia and Lisbon in Portugal and many other races had visits from Redway Runners.

Our courses have really been popular, many of our members started in our beginners’ groups, now we have the Need for Speed, Zero to Hero and Move on Up courses as well.

We have done well with awards as well, with the MK Hospital community award, highly commended in the Women’s running reader awards and we won local sports team at MK Inspiration awards

But so much more and these are but a few highlights of the year

  • first Redway Runners running Expo
  • first ramble and many new runs
  • Redway Runners under 16’s group started
  • new membership database
  • BBC ‘Truth about Obesity’ featured Redway Runners
  • special runs, Treasure hunt run, Five Lakes Challenge, Remembrance runs, Prison run, Funderground run

Anyway, none of this could be done without so many people who help in the club, from the committee members, the run leads, event committees and those who help in anyway with activities we do, without them the club would not be probably the worlds biggest and best running club

So, what does 2019 hold, never really too sure and that is part of the fun of enjoying the journey, we do have some plans, in January we start our new beginners’ groups, we have the second club running Expo, next cross-country match and our new return to running course, to name a few and lots more to come and developing nicely, our 2019 club trips are to Cyprus and Tallinn in Estonia.

But most of all we will focus on keeping the club fun, social, value for money and for the benefit of the runners.
So, thank you for running with Redway Runners.

New Beginners groups launched

The next Redway Runners beginners’ groups are starting in January 2019 and at the end of the course you will take part in the free Milton Keynes 5K parkrun at Willen at 9am on Saturday 30 March 2019, so do put this date in your diary for graduation

The courses are free, but you will need to be a Redway Runners member (membership is just £5). Joining now gives you membership to the 31 March 2020 – so about 15.5 months
Ideal for those wanting to start running or get back to running.
