It is with great sadness that we share the news that Maurice O’Connell has passed away. Maurice died from a suspected heart attack while out doing something he loved — his Sunday morning run on Sunday 16 August 2026.
Maurice meant so much to Redway Runners. He had been part of the club from its earliest days, giving his time and expertise by auditing the club accounts from the very beginning and supporting others as one of the run leads for our track sessions. Only on Friday afternoon, we were on a call together, working through the club’s move from Love Admin to a new platform and we spoke more about it at Saturdays Bury Field parkrun.
Maurice was a kind and great person to know, and an accomplished runner. Earlier this month, he completed the Bedford Autodrome 20-mile race and finished first in his age category.
He was a regular at many club runs and events, including last week’s Wednesday intervals and the Friday morning 10-mile club run and volunteered at our recent MK24 event.
So many members will have happy memories of Maurice — not only as a fellow runner, but as a true friend and someone who gave so much to the club.
A thank you also to those Redway Runners who went out on Sunday to help with looking for Maurice.
Our thoughts are with his wife, Michele, and his family at this incredibly sad time.
If you would like to talk, please contact me or any of the club welfare officers.
If you pass the Redway Runners memorial bench in Newlands, please take a quiet moment to remember Maurice and the lasting mark he has left on our club.
