** Training Tip: The Biggest Lesson I’ve Learned About Progress
After years in the marathon and ultra scene — long races, big training blocks, early morning Brickhills, and plenty of mistakes along the way — the biggest thing I’ve learned is this:
Consistency beats perfection. Every time.
When I first started running, I thought progress came from the big sessions: the long runs, the brutal hill days, the big weekend efforts. And yes, they matter. But over time — and especially while juggling work, family, and life — I realised something far more important:
It’s the small, repeatable sessions that move the needle.
Some of my best races and biggest breakthroughs didn’t come from perfect training blocks. They came from simply showing up, even on the days when life was messy, sleep was short, or motivation was low.
A 20–30 minute easy run on a busy day has saved more training cycles than any heroic session ever has. It keeps the routine alive, keeps the legs ticking, and stops the “I’ll start again next week” spiral that catches so many runners out.
What I’ve learned — and what I see in others — is this:
- You don’t need perfect weeks
- You don’t need to smash every session
- You just need to keep turning up
If you’re struggling to fit training around real life, shrink the session — don’t skip it. Your future self will thank you, and your race times will too.
