A fabulous turnout made for a cracking event at this year’s relay on the banks of Furzton Lake. We saw 65 teams competing in the various categories and having a great day out. We’ve always strived to make this an event with more than one face. The results demonstrate just what a fiercely fought battle it is at the top and it’s fantastic to watch these athletes battling it out on the course. But the day is just as much about the battles further down the field, about running your own best times, and of course running for the joy of it. And who doesn’t love to see the carnival atmosphere of fancy dress

Ultimately our aim is to deliver a day where everyone comes together, Redway Runners and our friends from lots of other local clubs to celebrate running, friends, family, health, and the fickle British weather. Within that spirit I would like to offer my warmest thanks and appreciation to everyone who came along and made such a great day of it.

Results

“The Light Drinkers” (Redway Runners) took the Mixed title in a very rapid 1:02:36, beating “Wine, Dine, Finish Line” (1:05:08) and “The Runway Reds” (1:06:24).

The all Female title went to our friends at Shenley Striders with one of their 6 teams, “Joy Striders” crossing the line in a brilliant (1:09:02) narrowly beating our own “The Rogue Rouge Team” and “Alice and the Wonder Ladies” with all 3 finishing within a minute of each other in the tightest contest of the day. More of the same next year please!

For the chaps we had “Three Old Man and an Athlete” romping home in the day’s quickest time of 1:01:48, just ahead of one of our Redway Runners 640 Group teams, “British Racing Green” (1:02:16) and the brilliantly named “Premature Acceleration” (1:03:03), who for the record beat “Knight Striders” by a single second into 4th.

And our Junior teams put in some top performances too. First in was Team 2 in a brilliant 1:08:27, followed by Team 5, Team 3, Team 4 and Team 1, all under 1:24:00. Impressive indeed considering the youngest runners were just 11 years old! This category was new this year, really a trial to see how it would go and I’m so pleased to say that it was a run-away success (!) and of all the day’s elements it is this I’d most like to encourage to grow for next year. I think, judging by the surnames, that most of the teams are Redway Runners related but it could easily be school teams, Scouts or Guides, other sports teams, etc. A big thank-you to Carol Glover for her efforts in organising all 5 teams this year.

Genci Pepaj (in a frankly ridiculous 13:10) rather ran away with the individual Fastest Lap title, beating Sean Pinney (the only other runner to break 14 minutes for the course) who was just half a minute ahead of Andrew Kirschner in 3rd.

Really great to see such a high standard of running and a very competitive mindset. My congratulations to the winners, consolation to those who left it all on the course and fell so tantalisingly close. There’s always next year!

And with the utmost appreciation, a special and booming shout out to the small army of dedicated and energetic volunteers who put in a long day to ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy the fun in a safe and impeccably organised environment. From Peter G on the mic, to the marshals on the course; those handling registration, first-aid, selling cakes, handing out water, answering questions, the whole lot: You guys absolutely rock, I cannot thank-you enough.

Lastly, and briefly I’d just like to say that events like this, good times with friends, are at the heart of what we do in Redway Runners. It is our spirit. Let’s keep doing all we can to energise these events in the club calendar with our support and enthusiasm. I hope you all had a great day and we welcome your feedback through any of the club’s channels as always. And of course I hope to see you all back next year for more of the same.
